Pitch Festival

01.03.17

This year marks the entry of a new festival on Australian soil: Pitch Festival. The announcement of Pitch Festival late last year caused a lot of excitement, and for good reason. Taking place over three days in a beautiful location in rural Victoria, it’s clearly been put together with great attention to detail, and there’s an absolutely killer lineup of internationals and select locals.

If you’re still sitting on the fence about going, we’ve put together a sampler of what Pitch has to offer below.

Answer Code Request

Answer Code Request is Patrick Gräser, a producer and DJ who emerged from the same ‘90s East German techno culture as legends like Marcel Dettmann and Shed/Head High. Like Dettmann (and formerly, Shed), he’s signed to Ostgut Ton and is resident at Berghain. While he’s known for his productions, which contrast ambient layers with hard broken beat and techno, he’s a great DJ.

Head High

Head High is René Pawlowitz, who is best known by his Shed alias. As Shed, he produced some of the most celebrated techno of the last decade, developing a singular style that is heavily influenced by breakbeat and bass music. Head High is Pawlowitz’s main house alias. Head High sets are big on ‘90s nostalgia: they sound like someone’s idealistic memory of early hardcore and rave.

Paula Temple

Paula Temple has been thinking about how to perform techno since the late ‘90s. She has explored hybrid live/DJ sets since then, developing a lightning fast and detailed style of mixing and layering. She bowed out of the techno world during the dark ages of the mid-2000s, only to return a few years later, as the music started to find a new way forward. Her hybrid sets zero in on the best parts of already very focussed loops, and in her choices you can hear years of experience in moving people in clubs.

Mike Servito

As the Bunker Podcast below shows, Mike Servito’s sets exploit the high energy, often unanticipated moments in house music. His sets have persuaded countless people who thought they’d had enough to keep going.

The Field

The Field’s music has always been made for festivals. Despite stylistic diversification over recent years, Axel Willner’s music always returns to the perfect loop and corresponding perfect state. We can imagine few things better than hearing this music live under the sun in the lush surrounds of the Victorian outback.
